Making Friends on a Summer Research Trip

Post by MedineInWien » Wed May 29, 2019 12:20 am

I am a Masters Student of History from the US doing archival and museum research in Vienna this summer. This is an independent research trip, so I don't have a program or a job to provide me with a built-in social network. As a result, I am hoping to make many new friends and find a community here during my summer stay - I can't just live my whole life here in dusty archives, after all! What are some of the best ways for a foreigner to make friends with the Viennese as well as other travelers?

Additionally, I would also like to say that I have lived in Austria before when I was on a study abroad program in Salzburg. I've visited visited Vienna a few times before, but never longer than four days at a time. I have a few Austrian friends from my previous trip as well, but they all live out in the western parts of the country. I speak German fairy well, and I even know some dialect.

Thanks everybody!

Only just saw your post - we have some barbecues over the summer months (check out the front page of the website for the dates). There are also plenty of social groups around town - from people like Internations, through to an Americans in Vienna facebook group).
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.
