negotiating salary

Post by ldn » Mon Jun 12, 2017 5:32 am

Hi everybody,

I am posting it on behalf of a friend who is looking for advice on salary negotiations in Austria. The area is engineering, connectivity software, secure comms, and the person comes with more than 20 years of experience. He is in the last stages of interviewing, with the face to face interview coming up. Is there a business etiquette to follow or how different is the culture of salary negotiations to the one in the UK? How likely is that the salary will be discussed at this interview, I presume he can ask about the salary bands? The minimum gross salary is advertised.

Thank you so much for your advice!

Traditionally it is second or third interview territory - unless of course there is a headhunter involved, of course in this day and age, it could now be that the first face-to-face interview is effectively already the second or third interview. Minimum gross salary is required to be stated on job ads in Austria, and over and above the minimum is based on previous relevant experience - although some companies might have caps on starting levels on the payscale in relation to how many years are taken into consideration.
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.
