Winter Tyres and where best to get them changed…?

Post by Anita S » Wed Oct 22, 2014 9:23 am

Hello!

Just realised we need to get winter tyres before 1st Nov…

Can somebody give me some idea of the names of affordable local garages, tyre shops and whereabouts so I can get them changed over?

Will the garages keep my normal tyres until April at a charge and then keep the winter tyres until the next time? How does it work normally?

Extremely grateful for any advice on this matter.

Thank you!
AnitaS

I used to get mine changed at Profi Reifen - I can't speak to the charges as the company paid but they certainly seemed to be popular and offered a good service. They stored my wheels/tyres but my guess is that it's a chargeable service.

Thank you Catweasel for that!

I will certainly give them a call and see how much they charge for the whole fitting and storage.

When you said wheels, does that mean you are not only buying winter tyres, you buy them with the wheel too?

Thank you!

On my first car I had two sets of wheels, but the second only had the one. You've got the choice.

Just a thought; very many city garages offer this service - I would pick the one closest to where you live so you do not have to drive far when you wake up one morning and it is snowing with the wrong wheels on :-)

Thank you! That is true. However, we don't use our car very often and it is currently packed in the park and ride miles away, just don't want to be caught with the wrong tyres when we do venture out!

I had a thought of going out of town completely to get the tyres if it means cheaper cost and storage…well until I can get some quotes that is, I am not sure if there is going to be much difference in cost?

I seem to recall I paid about 30 EUR per season (€60 a year) for storage, and €12 per change by appointment.

Hello!
I just want to update this post for those who may in future need to have their tyres changed, since I have now changed mine and gone through the process of doing it.

I went round 3 garages, all with tyre storage facilities and compared prices etc and the type of tyres etc. Although a little out of town, this last garage being the most helpful and most economical. Told them our planned usage over the winter months. They recommended us to try a set of Falken tyres instead of the top of the range Continental or Bridgestone. Falken tyres they said, would be good enough for short city driving and the occasional long trips, such as a couple of times to the ski resorts, which is exactly what we were planning to do. The mechanics and the office staff all speak English and were happy to do so. Very professional and dedicated lot and have a good sense of humour. I would highly recommend them.

Just putting my five cents in...

If you have the choice and you can afford it, I would definitely go for two sets of wheels+tyres, not just the tyres. Tyres suffer quite a bit being pulled off and on wheels. Plus, wheels in themselves aren't that expensive. Storing your winter tyres over summer on the wheels also makes them "relax" better (for want of a better word in English...)
