Hiking trails near Vienna (2-3 hours by train)?

Do you guys know of any good places to go that is not too far from Vienna (2-3 hours by train or other form of public transport?

A lot of people also ask about information for visiting Vienna - from a stopover to a vacation.

Hiking trails near Vienna (2-3 hours by train)?

Post by vikingabroad »

Hello dear Austria expats,

I'm going to Vienna very soon and since I have almost a week to spend I would like to take a day or two to go hiking in or at least near to the mountains.

Do you guys know of any good places to go that is not too far from Vienna (2-3 hours by train or other form of public transport?

By not too far I mean a travel time of maximum 2-3 hours by train. Since I would probably only have one day to go there and go back again.

Try the Rax or Schneeberg about 45 mins by train to the South of Vienna.
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.

Thank you so much! That looks like it's more easy to get to in one day.

How much do you think it will cost to go there by train and back? :)

I was starting to get a bit worried.

If anyone else have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated :)

https://www.wieneralpen.at/en has lots of different routes. Cost depends on whether you use the cable cars or funiculars at Rax or Schneeberg.

Train from Vienna likely to be about 20 eur return.

Rax seems to about 1 hour 10 mins by quickest route from Wien Hbf. Thought it was closer but think I was basing that on car from southern edge of town.

The Hochschwab area is quite nice... takes about 3 hours to get there... can hike around, stay the night, then hike around and comeback the next day. Lot's of options.
