Are you an expat or an immigrant?

Post by Tatt » Mon Mar 16, 2015 10:08 am

This article from the left leaning Guardian Newspaper in the UK says that only white people are expats whereas everyone else who moves for economic gain is an immigrant.

Having run expat events for years in the city I cannot bring myself to accept this lexicon, but I do see they have a point.

I realised that I was certainly not an expat any more when the shift of my vital interests became Vienna on a permanent basis. I now enjoy answering the question "How often do you go home?" with "Daily after work" I have a few nominal financial ties to the UK but other than family and friends nothing that requires me to gravitate back there.
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.

I guess I'm an immigrant, if you look at it as moving countries. Other than that, I'm just another European in a European country :)
