Scary Movie recommendations

Post by Bramish » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:32 pm

I'm on the look out for scary or creepy movies to watch. It's rare that I find a film genuinely unnerving - only examples I can think of ar Blair Witch Project, the original The Haunting and to a lesser extent The Shining - yet I'm still a horror fan and will watch anything of that genre, even knowing it's probably going to be pap. I recently saw Paranormal Acivity and was hugely underwhelmed - it had its moments but for the most part was dull and infuriating and I reckon a lot more could have been done with that concept in that particular film-making style.

So, any potentially overlooked gems you can suggest?

Recently I've watched a couple 'horror' films. I'm not a movie buff, especially on scary ones but I got them recommended to me...so here you are:

The Descent
High Tension (French film, if you watch it I want to hear your take on it)

Ha yeah thanks. I realised after I'd posted it that I wasn't even sure which section of the forum I was in.

The Descent was great.

I hated Haute Tension - it had it's moments but the end was a ridiculous cop out in my opinion.

The movie wasn't bad until the ending (I won't say too much in case someone wants to see it now) but it just didn't tie all together well. The ending was impossible in my opinion.

I've seen Bruno recently, that's as good as a horror! lol

The Hills Have Eye's....creepy, but gets stupid as most scary movies do.

Dawn of the Dead (the remake is pretty intense), 28 Days/Weeks Later (the second one never lets you relax) and Event Horizon (very eerie). The Silent Hill movie is also pretty good, it starts out really weird and keeps up the mind games throughout the movie, definitely worth watching.

There wasn't an 'Alien 2' movie; it was called 'Aliens' :?

Also I found Casino quite horrific when I watched it the first time, although it's more of a mafia thriller.

All good films LouLou - seen them though.

The Strangers wasn't bad. Eden Lake was a much better take on it, or even Ils (Them).

It was terrifying to me as a kid.

Probably not scary enough (but then I am a chicken when it comes to films), but my favorite "scary movie" is Fallen with Denzel Washington.

I can't watch Denzel Washington movies. He irritates the hell out of me.

I thought HIgh Tension was good. A pace I don't normally see in horror films.

Descent was pretty good, but the B quality distracted me a bit, anyone see the sequel yet?

I remember seeing Event Horizon as a kid and thought it was great.

"IT" is really a joke as an adult, but when i was a kid,, woah!!

The only ones Ill recommend then are. REC-the original foreign language version.
The original texas chain saw massacre...(Even the remake i liked though).
And the first Friday the 13th..set up a lot of the horror techniques we use as convention now.

Fallen was terrible.

I have Gothika to watch now but I've heard bad reviews...

The Ring was really good on the big screen, but tame at home. If you are up for a bit of blood then you can't go wrong with Hellraiser.

What Lies Beneath - I enjoyed that recently

Angel Heart- cureepy Mickey Rourke film
I'm just like every modern woman trying to have it all. A loving husband, a family. I only wish I had more time to seek out the dark forces and join their hellish crusade. That's all.
