Jesus Christ what a piece of s**t! I'm a big fan of Frank Baum's Oz series so was looking forward to a decent prequel movie. Sam Raimi's generally a decent director, even if I don't necessarily like all of his films. The cast looked pretty good - I've usually been impressed by the performances of James Franco and Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz are always at least watchable - but everything about this film was awful. Badly paced, badly acted and badly scripted. James Franco was particularly terrible, almost embarrassingly so. Maybe that was partly because of the godawful dialogue and 'jokes' he had to deliver constantly. And I didn't understand who we were supposed to empathise with - as a main protagonist and hero he was so unlikeable - barely any redeeming qualities at all. And what was the motivation for the witches? Alas, it could have been a great origin story.
