Owner of Cafe Hawelka dies aged 100

Post by Tatt »

Mr Hawelka, owner of the famous Cafe Hawelka just off the Graben, has died at the age of 100. Until recently he was still in the cafe every day from morning to night to greet guests and remind his staff to put ashtrays on the tables.

The end of an era. I´m a regular customer there, just for a bit of me time, and I recently thought it strange that I hadn´t seen him for a while. His café is an absolute institution, and is one of the many things that totally endear me to the city. A little bit of history died with him, may he rest in peace.

I used to go quite frequently when I was working at home and wanted a change of scene for a coffee - Josephine Hawelka was still alive back then. She was given a lengthy obit in The Times back then - I expect and hope he'll get similar treatment.
Vienna is like an Ikea sofa - you know you should upgrade, but why bother when it is this comfortable.
